Harold A. "Harry" Deters

Harold A. “Harry” Deters, 88, a resident of Bettendorf, died Sunday, January 29, 2023 at Bickford of Davenport.

Funeral services and Mass of Christian Burial celebrating his life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 25, 2023 at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Bettendorf. Visitation will be 9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. Saturday at church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John Vianney Catholic Church or Humility Homes & Services.

Harry was born July 10, 1934 in St. Louis, Missouri, the son of Leopold and Rose (Vorholt) Deters, and was one of twelve children. Harry served in the Army from 1954 – 1956 and was stationed in Germany. He graduated from St. Louis University, where he met his wife, “C.J.” (Vogelsang). They were married in Ft. Mitchell, Kentucky, and recently celebrated 62 years of marriage.

After graduation, Harry worked in the cement industry until his retirement in 2000. He was an avid golfer, and on two occasions made a hole-in-one. He enjoyed watching the St. Louis Cardinals, listening to Frank Sinatra, eating Snickers bars the warm winters in Arizona; and was a formidable opponent at gin rummy. Harry was well-known for his unique sense of humor.

His survivors include his beloved wife and two children, Rob (Monica) of Granite Bay, California, and Nancy (Igor) Deters Tomcej of Denver, Colorado; two grandchildren, Madeline “Maddy” and Elisabeth “Libby”; a brother, Elmer of St. Louis, Missouri; and many nieces and nephews.  

He was preceded in death by his parents; nine brothers, Leopold, Luke, Paul, Chuck, Eugene, Richard, Norman, Joe, and Jim; and a sister, Anna.
