In Loving Memory of Bessie Berle (Clark) Mattly

Bessie Berle (Clark) Mattly, 91, of Davenport, Iowa, passed away peacefully on September 21, 2026, at Genesis East Hospital surrounded by the love of her family.

A visitation will be held on Monday, September 28, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, with funeral services immediately following. Following the services at the funeral home Bessie will be laid to rest at Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery.

Bessie was born on December 20, 1934, in Centerville, Iowa, to Lonnie Lee Clark and Leona (Scarlet) Clark. She was a woman whose life was defined by unconditional love, quiet strength, and unwavering devotion to her family. To know Bessie was to know kindness. She found joy in the simple things, especially caring for her beloved animals, who brought her comfort and companionship throughout her life.

While she loved many things, nothing brought Bessie greater happiness than being a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother. Her family was the center of her world. She poured her heart into every generation that followed her, offering guidance, encouragement, laughter, and a love that never wavered. Her home was a place where family gathered, memories were made, and everyone was welcomed with open arms.

Bessie leaves behind a legacy rooted in love and family. Those who will forever cherish her memory include her sisters, Fairy Buban and Jennifer Ontiveros; her daughters, Mary Jane Castel, Joyce Garcia, and Betty Castro; 19 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren who were blessed to know her love and wisdom.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lonnie and Leona Clark; two beloved daughters; eleven siblings; one granddaughter; and one great-grandson.

Though our hearts are heavy with grief, we find comfort in the countless memories Bessie leaves behind. Her gentle spirit, caring heart, and deep love for her family will continue to live on in all who knew her. She taught us the importance of family, perseverance, compassion, and finding joy in life's simplest moments. Her presence will be deeply missed, but her legacy will remain forever woven into the lives of those she loved.
