Steven C. Tolan

Steven C. Tolan, CDR, USN (Ret.) 80, of Davenport, passed away Wednesday, September 16, 2026, at his home. Per his request, cremation has been accorded and no services held.

Steven Craig Tolan was born July 14, 1946, in Burlington, IA, to Peter and Dorothy (nee Stagg) Tolan.

There are some lives that are difficult to sum up in a few paragraphs because there is simply too much to tell. Steven was one of those people. He lived a life of service, adventure, courage, curiosity, and accomplishment, and somehow found time along the way to enjoy a good book, a day in the woods with his bow, a woodworking project, and a beer and cigar with his buddies.

Steven proudly served his country in both the United States Marine Corps and the Navy, eventually retiring after a remarkable military career that included three tours in Vietnam. During his first tour, he served as a medic, caring for wounded service members in the midst of combat. His courage under fire earned him numerous decorations, including the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for bravery and the Purple Heart with two gold stars, along with the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Navy Commendation Medal with Combat V and two gold stars, Navy Achievement Medal with gold star, Combat Action Ribbon, Presidential Unit Citation with bronze star, and Navy Unit Commendation with bronze star.

His military career, however, was about much more than the medals on his uniform. Steven became an aerospace physiologist, working in the fascinating world where medicine, human performance, and aviation came together. He assisted in the training of pilots and was involved in investigating plane crashes, helping to understand what happened when things went wrong and, more importantly, how future tragedies might be prevented.

His expertise even took him beyond the military and into Hollywood. Steven helped train Tom Cruise for his role in “Top Gun” and Clint Eastwood for “Firefox”, bringing his real-world knowledge of aviation and the human body to the big screen. It was a pretty remarkable chapter in the life of a man who had already experienced more than most people could imagine.

Perhaps the best way to remember him, is not simply by the medals he earned or the impressive places his career took him, but as a man who “served bravely, lived curiously, worked with purpose, and enjoyed life on his own terms.”

Those left to honor his memory include his daughter Michelle (Anthony) Maduska and granddaughter Madelyn of Murrieta, CA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Pamela Jo Palmer, and brother Jeff Tolan.
