Rodney Mooney

Funeral services to celebrate of the life of Rodney C. Mooney, 87, of Bettendorf, will be 10:30AM Thursday, October 21, 2021 at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport. Burial will take place with military honors at the Rock Island National Cemetery-Arsenal Island. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4 until 7PM at the funeral home. There will be additional visitation Thursday from 930AM until the time of the service. Memorials may be made to the Ronald McDonald House, Iowa City or yearly donation to Toys for Tots.

Rodney died October 14 at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House.

Rodney was born December 20, 1933 in Iowa City, a son of Hazel (Junkins) Mooney and James Mooney, Sr.  He was united in marriage to Joanne Wulf on December 10, 1955.  She preceded him in death on January 4, 2016.  He proudly served our country in the Marine Corps and the Marine Corps Reserves for 41 years and 9 months. He was the first in the Marine Corps to earn the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 5 (CWO5). Rod was a Marine through and through and loved everything the Marine Corps stands for.

Rod was a shift supervisor in the Flat Finishing Thermal CPD at Alcoa. He retired in 1993 after over 30 years of service.

Rod enjoyed writing short stories compiling them as “Tales from the Moon.”

Survivors include his children: Randall (Jayne) Mooney, Bettendorf, Tracy (David) Lira, Bettendorf; grandchildren Suzanne Mooney, Gangnam South Korea, Caroline (Sgt Alexander Widick, USMC), Pensacola, Florida, Patrick Mooney, Bettendorf, Andres and Elizabeth Lira, Bettendorf; great-grandchild Lucas Widick; siblings: Gerald Mooney, Davenport, Leslie Mooney, Moline, Illinois, and Sharon Michaelsen, Geneseo, Illinois, and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, Rod was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, James Mooney, Jr who was killed in action in Korea on September 14, 1951, and infant siblings Russell and Marie.
