Obituary

Funeral services and Mass of Christian Burial for James E. “Jim” Peterson, 82, of Bettendorf, will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 24, 2021 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Bettendorf. The Mass will be livestreamed by visiting https://www.facebook.com/ololbett  Burial will be in the Rock Island National Cemetery, Arsenal Island.  Visitation will be 10 until 11 a.m. in the gathering space at church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Camp Abe Lincoln (ymcaimv.org) or St Labre Indian School (stlabre.org). Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

James Elmer Peterson was born on January 30, 1939 in Glendive, Montana, a son of Elmer “Ole” and Margaret (Bartley) Peterson.  Jim graduated from Park County High School in Livingston, Montana and earned an undergraduate degree from Gonzaga University, Spokane, Washington in 1960. 

Upon graduation from Gonzaga, Jim enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific Fleet aboard the USS Midway, USS Neches, Fleet Training Group, Pearl Harbor and was a Vietnam veteran. After eight years active duty he served in the active reserves and retired as a Captain in 1985.

Jim was united in marriage to Rosemary Fox on January 12, 1963 at Old St. Mary’s Catholic Church, San Francisco, California.  They have shared over 58 years of marriage and memories together.

Jim’s career with Procter and Gamble brought the Peterson family to Bettendorf in 1970; he retired from their sales division in 1994.

He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Gonzaga University Alumni Association, and the Scott County Family Y. He was a longtime volunteer at Saint Anthony’s Window and as a driver for the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center.

Jim enjoyed high school and college sports and was a fan of the Bettendorf Bulldogs, Iowa Hawkeyes, and forever loyal to the Bulldogs of Gonzaga University.

Survivors include his wife, Rosemary, Bettendorf, children: Mark (Sylvie) Peterson, St. Malo, France, Paul (Katie Wagman) Peterson, Seattle, Washington, and Jennifer Peterson, Pasadena, California; grandsons: Nolan and Mathis Peterson, Paris, France, and a brother, Terry Peterson, Spokane, Washington.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jack.  May they rest in peace.
