Biography

A Memorial Mass for Virginia C. “Ginny” Smith, 85, a resident of Davenport, will be 11 a.m., Tuesday, January 16, 2018 at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, 4105 N. Division Street, Davenport. Burial will take place in the Rock Island National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. The family will greet friends Tuesday from 10 until 11 a.m. in the gathering space at the church. Mrs. Smith passed away following an unexpected and brief illness on Thursday, January 11, 2018 at the Kahl Home, Davenport. She was proud to have lived in her home up until a few weeks ago. Virginia Claire Costello was born on July 8, 1932 in Evanston, Illinois, one of eight children of Charles and Catherine (Mulholland) Costello. Ginny graduated from Immaculate Conception Academy, Davenport and Marycrest College, Davenport. She was united in marriage to Dale Phillip Smith on May 18, 1957 at Holy Family Catholic Church, Davenport. He preceded her in death on February 23, 2008 after 50 years of marriage.

Ginny was a loving wife, and outstanding mother, wonderful homemaker who enjoyed raising her children and spending time supporting all her grandchildren. She was an excellent seamstress, swimmer, gardener and enjoyed volunteering at Our Lady of Victory’s church bazaars and participating with the Ladies Circle group. Sharing in coordinating the many local extended family picnics, birthday parties and holiday gatherings that created so many cherished family memories. Her greatest pleasures were traveling by car with Dale across the country visiting family and friends. They shared a special fondness for Colorado, the southwest of New Mexico and Arizona.

She is survived by her six children and their spouses, Christopher and Molly Smith of Castle Pines, CO, Stephanie and Jeff Beard of Davenport, Tim and Diana Smith of Roanoke, VA, Teresa and Dr. Bernard Villegas of Phoenix, AZ, Maurita and Phillip Krotz of Walker, IA and Michaela and Patrick Baxter of Urbandale, IA; twelve grandchildren, Erik and Austin Smith, Jennifer Hyslope, Emily Beard, Jeff (Tamara) Ring, Corey (Andrea) Ring, Caetano, Mercedes and Mateo Villegas, Dillon (Lindsay) Krotz , Sawyer Krotz, and Jason Baxter; great-grandchildren, Bridgette and Brentley Ring, Brooklyn and Devin Ring; siblings: Mary Rose (Carl) Mooney, Charles (Mary) Costello, and Rita (Earl) Tandeski, and many beloved nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by infant twin children: Vincent and Melanie Smith, her parents, and siblings: Patsy Cooney, John (and Mary Ann) Costello, Sr. Barbara Costello, Katie Costello and brother in-law Dave M. (and Char) Smith of Johnston, IA. May they all rest in peace.
