Veronica “Roni” Plante died peacefully on May 22, 2026, at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House with her husband and daughter by her side.
Visitation will be held from 4 until 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, at the St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Bettendorf. There will be additional visitation from 10 a.m. preceding funeral services and Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, at St. John Vianney. Burial will be in the Rock Island National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Roni was born December 6, 1948, in Pueblo Colorado to Benigno and Mollie (Trujillo) Lopez. She graduated from Pueblo East High School in 1966 and moved to Washington, D.C., where she worked for the FBI and then the Treasury Department for ten years before returning home to work at the Pueblo Army Depot.
Roni met her husband, Ronald, after he was transferred to the Pueblo Army Depot. They were married on February 1, 1988, in Pueblo. Roni and their daughter, Michelle, joined Ron to live in Kure, Japan while he worked at the Akizuki Ammunition Depot. In 1993, the family relocated to Bettendorf when Ron was transferred to the Rock Island Arsenal. Roni rejoined the federal workforce a few years later and retired from the Defense Accounting and Finance Service in December of 2002.
Following Ron’s retirement in 2016, he and Roni traveled around the world and visited all seven continents. Their last trip was to Athens, Greece in November 2024. Her other adventures included tandem skydiving for her 50th birthday and taking private swimming lessons in the Davenport YMCA at age 74 before snorkeling in the Caribbean Sea in Belize.
Roni belonged to the Saint Monica's Circle at St. John Vianney Church and performed numerous volunteer activities for the church. At home, she was a passionate family historian who dedicated countless hours to researching her ancestry. She also found great joy in sewing, solving crossword puzzles, watching the birds and squirrels in her backyard, and relaxing with her beloved cat, Baby.
Roni is survived by her husband, Ronald of Bettendorf; daughter Michelle of Kansas City, Missouri; sister, Ida Anderson (Dennis) of Casper, Wyoming; mother-in-law, Alice Plante of Keedysville, Maryland; sister-in-law, Lisa Dwyer (Mark) of Gibsonville, North Carolina; brothers-in-law: Russell Plante (Collette) of Keedysville, Maryland and Randall Plante (Veronica) of Mooresville, North Carolina; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ben and Mollie Lopez, her first husband, Ronald Urueta, and brother, Benedict.
