Susan Lee Bovenkerk was born May 16, 1949, in Chicago, to Howard and Violet (Anderson) Bovenkerk. She graduated from Augustana College and Western Illinois University, earning her master’s degree in liberal arts. She was united in marriage to James Wolters on June 30, 1979, in Davenport.
Sue dedicated her life to education and was a beloved schoolteacher who inspired countless students throughout her 34-year career at Wilson Elementary School in Davenport. She took great pride in helping children learn and grow, and she was known for her patience, creativity, and genuine care for her students.
Outside of her work in the classroom, Sue enjoyed antiquing and collecting Howdy Doody memorabilia, a hobby that reflected her appreciation for history and nostalgia. A talented pianist, she found great joy in music until her illness made it too difficult to play.
Sue was also deeply committed to her community and to historic preservation. She was a past president of the Colonel Davenport Foundation, where she worked to promote and protect local heritage.
Those who knew her will remember her for her warmth, sense of humor, and dedication to her friends and community. Despite the many challenges she faced, she approached life with grace, optimism, and an unwavering spirit.
She is survived by her husband Jim; son Mark (Hannah) Wolters; and grandsons Gabe, Jackson, and Brody Wolters, all of Davenport.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers James, Bill, and Paul.
