Sheryl “Sherry” Lee Simon, 80, of DeWitt, Iowa, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, Tuesday, October 6, 2026, at MercyOne Hospital in Davenport, Iowa. Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport, assisted the family.
Sherry was born July 19, 1946, in Waverly, Iowa, to Bob and Milly Fisher. She later made DeWitt, her home, becoming a longtime and beloved member of the community. Sherry worked for many years at the DeWitt Community School District, where she became a familiar and caring presence to many in the community.
Sherry was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who spent her life working hard and providing for the people she loved. She was an avid reader who could often be found lost in a good book. She loved the simple pleasures of life, especially sitting outside on a beautiful day, feeling the sunshine, and spending time with the people she loved.
She was a passionate Dallas Cowboys and Iowa Hawkeyes fan and took great pride in cheering on her teams. Above all, Sherry’s greatest joy was her family, and she treasured every moment spent together, especially watching her family grow through the years. She also valued the many friendships she made throughout her life, including her longtime best friend, Shirley Garrity. The two shared a wonderful friendship filled with years of laughter, stories, and memories, and Shirley was a dear friend who was an important part of Sherry’s life.
Sherry was a strong, independent woman who was never afraid to speak her mind. She was hardworking, determined, and deeply devoted to her family. Her strength and the life she built for her children and grandchildren will be remembered and carried on through the generations who loved her.
She is survived by her daughter, Amy Simon; granddaughters, Alyssa Schultz (Kaleb) and Jordan Averill (James); and great-granddaughters, Tayla and Tatum.
She was preceded in death by her son, Bradley Simon; her parents, Bob and Milly Fisher; and her brother, Doug Fisher.
Sherry will be deeply missed, but the love she gave, the memories she created, and the strength she passed down to her family will remain with them always. Her years in DeWitt, her work within the community, and most importantly, the family she loved so fiercely, will forever be a part of the legacy she leaves behind.
In honoring Sherry’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Sherry’s memory are encouraged to donate a book to a local library in her memory, a meaningful tribute to a woman who found so much joy in reading
