Bob was born on July 29, 1942, to Antonio and Narcissa (Quijas) Solis and was the fourth of five brothers and one sister. He attended St. Anthony’s Catholic School in downtown Davenport, where he walked every day escorted by loyal canine companion, Blackie. He went on to graduate from Assumption High School in 1961. Bob was united in marriage to Sharron Lorence on January 25, 1964 at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, Davenport. They celebrated 62 years of marriage this year. Bob retired after 20 years of service with International Harvester - Farmall Works in Rock Island, Illinois. He went on to own the Solis Mission Bell restaurant in North Park Mall with his wife before later owning a successful professional janitorial service company in the Quad Cities. A lifelong talented athlete and natural leader, Bob played football and ran track in high school and went on to coach youth football, elementary flag football, Little League baseball, and basketball with his brother, Gabe. Bob enjoyed a large and tight-knit family with whom he remained very close until his last days.
Bob enjoyed adventure and in their empty-nest days he and Sharron traveled to Mexico, Ireland, and the far reaches of the United States. Bob ran the Bix7 road race on his 40th birthday and he and Sharron loved getting out to ride their bikes all around the Quad Cities. Bob was known within his family as the center of fun and mischief, which included cheating at many a board game, embellishing many tall tales, and chirping in many a quip with superb comedic timing. Bob was always playful and active with grandchildren and great-grandchildren, teaching them to play checkers, perfect the hook shot and throw a spiral. Bob was magnetic in his charisma and charm – from his boyhood days as a favorite of the tough-as-nails nuns, and throughout his life as he could make anyone of any age feel like the center of the universe. He was always a man of dignity and common sense.
Bob was a demanding but inspiring father, engaged and loving grandfather, and devoted great-grandfather. Bob’s memory is celebrated and honored by wife Sharron Solis; his children: Rick (Brandi) Solis, of Bettendorf, Michelle (Jim) Solis Russell, of Davenport, Brian (Michelle) Solis, of Lee’s Summit, Missouri; grandchildren Thera (Dietz) (Tyler) Jones, Kayla Snyder, Isabella Solis, Roberto “Bobby” Solis, Madeleine Engstrom, Gabrielle Hart (Sean Gubitosi), Brianna Solis, and Quinn Solis; and great-grandchildren Jagger Jones, Joslyn Jones, Addy Lucas, Zuri Snyder, Rori Snyder, Paul Engstrom, and Colten Engstrom; siblings: John (Debbie) Solis, Moline, Frank (Barb) Solis, Davenport, and Kathy Solis, Mexico, sister-in-law, Virginia Solis, Davenport.
Bob was preceded in death by son, Nicholas Solis, parents, Antonio and Narcissa Solis, God-son, Patrick Solis, nephew, Thomas Solis, and brothers, Anthony Solis and Gabriel (Mary) Solis.
Bob’s family wishes to extend special thanks to his many caring friends at Senior Star MemoryCare in Davenport, and to Heartland Hospice who provided exceptional devotion, care, and comfort to Bob in a multitude of ways, including live acoustic guitar and vocals.
