Robert L. Hassman, Jr., 78, of Davenport passed away peacefully at home on Friday, February 13th.
Visitation will be held from 4-7pm on Thursday, February 19th at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, 614 N. Main, Davenport. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, February 20th at Holy Family Catholic Church, 1923 Fillmore St., Davenport.
Bob was born in Davenport, Iowa on May 18th, 1947. He was the son of Robert L. Hassman, Sr. and Mary Elizabeth (Morehead) Hassman. He graduated from West High School in 1965 and afterwards attended the University of Iowa. On June 17th, 1972 in Davenport, he married Pamela Cummings.
Bob worked at International Harvester for over 35 years as a machine operator and he retired in 2010. He was a musician. Earlier in life he played the violin; later, he played the guitar and had jam sessions with his dad and brother who were also musicians. He had a great appreciation of many genres of music, including opera and classical music, which he passed on to his children. He enjoyed spending time with his friends Joe Whipka and Jeff Lemm. He loved languages and was known to bust out random phrases in different languages. He had a lifelong curiosity of science, history and nature. He was a great fan of the Detroit Lions and Tigers.
Faith was important to Bob. He was a devout Catholic and worked hard to ensure his children received a Catholic education. He was an excellent provider and made many significant sacrifices in order to support his family. He was an assistant coach to several of his children’s sports activities and he loved riding bikes with his family along the Duck Creek Trail. Summer nights usually involved running races with his kids and he never let them win. He had a great belly laugh as well as an endless supply of torturous dad jokes.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Pam and their children: Paul Hassman of Pensacola, FL; Cynthia (Luke) Street and their children, Lewis, Cedric, Finnegan and Edmund of Rock Island, IL; Katie Hassman and her children Gabby, Sammie, and Jason Herrera; Joe Hassman; and a great-granddaughter, Alaina, all of Davenport; his brother John (Kathy) Hassman of Indianapolis, IN; his brothers- and sisters-in-law, numerous nieces and nephews, as well as the significant others of his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his nephew Nick and his son, Jim.
