Obituary

Robert Eugene Durnin, 93, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and dedicated physician, passed away on May 7, 2026, at his home in Portland, Oregon, surrounded by the legacy of a life well-lived. Bob was born on April 11, 1933, in Davenport, Iowa.

Bob was a man of great intellect and steadfast devotion. After graduating from Saint Ambrose College and completing his medical studies at The University of Iowa, he served as a physician at the University of Iowa from 1960–61. It was there that he met a young nurse named Signe Van Houten; they were married on August 18, 1962, beginning a 62-year journey of love and adventure.

Bob’s career in medicine took the family to Los Angeles, California, where he practiced at Cedars of Lebanon and Presbyterian Hospital, before eventually settling in Madison, Wisconsin as a founding Physician of Madison Radiologists. While he was a respected physician, Bob was equally known for his curious spirit. Alongside Signe, he traveled the globe, exploring China and much of Europe, always eager to learn from the world around him.

A true partner in all things, Bob shared Signe’s passion for history. Together, they painstakingly refurbished five historic buildings in Mineral Point, Wisconsin, dating back to the 1700s. While Signe ran their antiques business, Bob provided the steady hand and shared vision that turned old structures into homes filled with story and character.

To his three boys, Bob was a pillar of strength—the "just right" mixture of discipline and encouragement. He was a patient mentor through every misadventure and a proud witness to every success. His family was his greatest pride, and he took immense joy in watching his grandchildren grow.

He is survived by his children, Matthew Durnin, Jonathan Durnin, and Tim Durnin; and his cherished grandchildren, Mackenzie, Owen, Braedon, Aubrey, Kaelyn, and Chase.

Bob was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Signe, who passed just eighteen months prior; his mother, Edith Mary Grachek; and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Johanna and Virgle Van Houten.

A private family service will be held. He will be laid to rest alongside Signe at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Davenport, Iowa.
