Richard "Dick" Walters, 92, passed away peacefully at home in Rock Island on May 3, 2026, with his wife Jane right by his side. A memorial service to celebrate Dick’s life will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, May 7, 2026, at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport. Family will greet friends beginning at 1:00 pm on Thursday, until the time of the service.
A proud Davenport native and devout Catholic, Dick attended St. Joseph's School, Davenport High, St. Ambrose Academy, and served in the US Army. He was employed by Iowa-Illinois Gas and Electric (and part-time by the QC Times) until retirement, and then he never looked back. Dick and Jane went on adventures all over the world - Egypt, Europe, China, and beyond.
From a very young age, he was passionate about any and all sports - and as an adult, he was an exceptional handball, squash, and racquetball player, picking up tennis later in life. He learned to golf after retirement and scored a hole-in-one at Emeis. He and Jane rode RAGBRAI and ran the Bix for many years. A lifetime member of the Scott County Y, he remained an avid booster over the decades.
Dick was hands down the world's biggest Cubs fan. He and Jane spent every spring in Mesa and every summer in the stands at Wrigley, with him keeping a box score, watching the game, and listening to the WGN broadcast simultaneously. He was also a fan of the Hawkeyes, Notre Dame, and the occasional ice-cold beer.
Dick loved his church, his treasured mother, his family and many friends, and most of all, his partner in crime, Jane. The world will be a smaller and less interesting place without him in it.
Godspeed, Dickie Lee. You were loved so much and will be missed.
Dick is survived by his wife, Jane (née Jeanette Hanlin), daughter Lisa Garman (Chris) of Davenport and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Alice, and stepfather, Henry Paasch, his brothers Rolland (Rolly) and Larry (Jay) Wolters, all of Davenport. Dick would have been 93 on May 31.
