Richard J. “Whitey” Fleischman, 91, of Davenport, died Sunday, September 14, 2025 at his home surrounded by family.
A Memorial Mass will be offered at 11 a.m. Thursday, September 25, 2025 at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, 4105 N. Division Street, Davenport. Burial will be in the Rock Island National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. The family will greet friends Thursday from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. in the gathering space at church. Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, MercyOne Genesis Hospice, or the Shriners Children’s Hospital. Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Richard John Fleischman was born on June 15, 1934 in Davenport, a son of Anton and Catherine (Ries) Fleischman. He graduated from the University of Iowa with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. Dick proudly served our country in the Air Force, stationed primarily in North England.
Dick retired as a civil engineer for the Rock Island District U.S. Army Corps of Engineers after 34 years in 1994. During his career with the Corps of Engineers, he worked on numerous water resource development studies and projects in the Upper Mississippi River Basin. He was a member of the Society of American Military Engineers.
Dick was also a member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.
He volunteered for the Greenway Habitat for a number of years, planting over 1000 trees in the City of Davenport. Dick enjoyed golfing, biking, gardening, and keeping his yard immaculate. He was the “BEST” gin player in the Quad Cities and played gin with the same group of guys for over 50 years.
Those left to honor his memory are his wife, Linda, Davenport; children and their spouses: Tera (Jeffrey) Hill, Bettendorf Anne (Jim Stiman) Fleischman, Rock Island, Jon Fleischman, Davenport; and Joseph (April) Fleischman, Des Moines; grandchildren: Baylor (Megan) Hill, Parker Hill, Barrett Hill, Zachary Fleischman, Braelyn Fleischman, JJ Fleischman, and Madison Fleischman; a brother, John “Jack” (JoAnne) Fleischman, Davenport; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings: Ruth Testroet, Anthony Fleischman, and Catherine Freund. May they rest in peace.
