Ramona Gonzales

Ramona A. Gonzales, 92, of Commerce, CA, passed away Monday, February 22, 2021 at the home of her daughter Valerie.  She passed peacefully, doing what she loved most, reading in her favorite chair. The family has chosen rite of cremation that will be followed by internment at Rose Hills Memorial Park, Whittier, CA as well as a celebration of her life.

Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, of Davenport, is assisting the family in making arrangements.

Ramona Avila was born May 16, 1928 in Los Angeles, to her parents Pedro and Felicitas (Gutierrez) Avila. She was united in marriage to Henry M. Gonzales in 1962 in Los Angeles.  He preceded her in death in 1990.

Prior to her retirement, Ramona enjoyed her job as an inspector for Federal-Mogul, now known as Hutchinson Sealing Systems in Downey, CA. In addition to her full-time job, she served in many leadership roles throughout her 18 years on PTA. Ramona was a Band Booster for 6 years(treasurer for 2 years), Religious Education Aide at Saint Marcellinus Church, avid supporter of her local library, and was always volunteering her time to raise money for various clubs and causes.

In her spare time, she loved to read, go for long walks, and was always socializing with her friends and family.

In lieu of flowers the family encourages the donation of books to a local library, school, or a friend in her memory. Ramona believed that every child should have the gift of a good book and afforded the resources to learn how to read.

Those left to celebrate her life include daughter Valerie Alves and her husband Ilidio, of Davenport; grandchildren Jonathan Alves, of Los Angeles, Rebecca Connors and her husband Alex, of Davenport, and Elizabeth Alves, of Davenport and sister Gloria Contreras, of California.

In addition to her husband Henry, she was preceded in death by brothers Michael and Fidel Avila.
