Mr. Calzada-Rameño passed away Friday, December 12, 2025, at Harmony Utica Ridge, Davenport.
Rafael was born March 28, 1938, in Chapala, Jalisco, Mexico, the only son of Rafael Calzada and Lucia Rameño.
Rafael lived life with energy, humor, and a deep appreciation for the people around him. A lifelong fútbol fan, he spent countless hours on the field playing the game he loved. Later in life, he proudly continued his connection to the game as a referee, remaining close to the sport that brought him so much joy. It was through fútbol that he met the love of his life, María del Refugio-Herrera, his future wife, who first came to watch him play, beginning a beautiful story that would last a lifetime. They were united in marriage on April 25, 1957.
Known for his outgoing personality, Rafael was a natural jokester and the life of every gathering. His quick wit, infectious laughter, and playful spirit brought warmth and laughter wherever he went.
When not on the pitch or sharing a laugh, he could be found working in his garden and yard. Prior to his retirement he had been a metal worker for Rich Metals Co.
Above all else, Raphael adored his family. He was a devoted grandfather and great-grandfather who treasured every moment spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Their happiness meant everything to him, and his love for them was constant and unmistakable.
Survivors include his wife, María; daughters Adriana (Andrew) Sorenson of Jefferson, IA, Lourdes Gutierrez of San Antonio, Lucia (Juan) Montaño of Davenport; son Arturo (Lynn) Calzada of Davenport; seventeen grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his son Rafael “Fay” Calzada-Herrera, grandson Andrew Sorenson, and five sisters.
