Mrs. Sterling died Thursday, February 26, 2026, in Davenport surrounded by family.
Patricia Ann Flaherty was born on January 29, 1930, in Davenport, a daughter of William J. and Dorothy M. (Cawiezell) Flaherty. She graduated from Holy Family Grade School, Immaculate Conception Academy in 1948 and later from Marycrest College in 1952 with a degree in art.
Following graduation, she took a job at the Rock Island Arsenal where she was a technical illustrator in the Art Department. This is where she met Calvin P. “Cal” Sterling and they were united in marriage on May 26, 1962, at Holy Family Catholic Church, Davenport. He preceded her in death on October 19, 2007.
Patricia worked at the Arsenal until she and Cal started a family. She went back to work in 1980 for the Davenport Community School District as a aide in the ESL department at West High School.
Patricia cherished her family and the time spent with them. Art was her passion; she loved to draw and passed that love of art to her children. She also enjoyed reading and listening to music.
Those left to cherish her memory are her children: Rev. John Sterling, Davenport, Patrick Sterling, West Allis, Wisconsin, William Sterling, Northbrook, Illinois, Gregory (Dr. Carrie) Sterling, Middleton, Wisconsin, and Ann Sterling, Davenport; grandchildren: Hugh, Andrew, Charlie, Beatrice, and Jane; and dear cousins, Mark (Judy) Flaherty and Bill (dec.) (Anabel) Flaherty .
In addition to her husband, Patricia was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, John (Betty) Flaherty, and Mary (Jimmy) Miller, and dear cousin, Bill Flaherty. May they rest in peace.
