Melvin Thomas

December 5, 1958 — May 14, 2025

Melvin Thomas, 66 , of Marion, Iowa, passed away May 14th, 2025.

Memorial services will be held at Halligan-McCabe DeVries funeral home in Davenport, IA, May 31st, from 12pm-1pm.

Melvin was born December 5th, 1958, in Washington, DC to Eloise Walker and Leslie Thomas Sr. Melvin graduated from Central High School. Melvin then joined the army on May 5th of 1979 until April 12th of 1987 when he was honorably discharged. Melvin took pride in serving his country, carrying himself with honor and integrity in all he did.

Melvin had a love for sports football (Dallas Cowboys), basketball (LA Lakers), and bowling.

Melvin had a gentle spirit and a heart full of laughter. He never hesitated to lend a helping hand or speak his truth. His convictions were strong-he believed what he believed, and he stood tall in those beliefs with a voice that reflected strength and grace. Melvin truly had a heart of gold, a heart that gave without expectation, loved without condition, left an imprint on everyone blessed to know him. His sense of humor was a gift, always lightening the moment and drawing people closer. He was a man of deep faith who loved the lord and often quoted a scripture to offer wisdom and encouragement. His walk with God was personal, steady and unwavering. His legacy of love, laughter, strength, and faith will always live on.

Melvin deeply loved his family and found purpose in working hard and helping others. He had a way of bringing up funny stories from childhood with his siblings. His smile mirrored that of his daddy.

The light of his life was his precious “One and Only” daughter, Unique. His love for her was beyond measure-pure, powerful and filled with pride. He celebrated her unique accomplishments and cherished her presence in his life. She was his joy and greatest gift. Melvin also embraced Marco who is the brother of Unique as his own and extended his love without condition.

Survivors include his daughter Unique (Flemeka) Thomas; his sisters Catherine Scott Jackson, Dorothy (J.W.) Doshe, Linette Thomas, Annette (Walter) Jackson, Roslyn Reynolds, Nicole Walker; brothers Theodore Wells, Laberne (Teresa) Thomas, and Raymond Stallings.

He was preceded in death by his parents Eloise Walker and Leslie Thomas Sr and brother Leslie Thomas Jr.
