Melvin “Mel” Elmer Puck, 89, passed away peacefully at his home in Blue Grass on August 17, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Visitation for Mel will take place on August 22, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home in Davenport, Iowa. A Funeral Service will follow on August 23, 2025, beginning at 11:00 AM at the same location. Burial will be in Maysville Cemetery, in Maysville, Iowa.
Melvin was born in Davenport, Iowa on April 1, 1936, to Elmer and Bernetta (Moeller) Puck. Mel grew up with a reputation of being a remarkable individual whose life was defined by his unwavering dedication to his career, his community, and above all, his family. He married the love of his life, Joanne Brockmann, on April 6, 1957, and she blessed him with four daughters.
Throughout his life, Mel dedicated himself to public service. He proudly served as the first Town Marshall in Blue Grass, serving for four years, and went on to retire as a Sergeant from the Scott County Sheriff's Department in 1991. His commitment to the community continued as he drove a school bus for many years in the North Scott School District, becoming a familiar face to students and families alike. Many will fondly remember him driving the tractor at the Machine Shed, a testament to his hands-on approach to life and work.
Mel was known for his kindness and welcoming spirit, always making others feel at ease in his presence. His great sense of humor made him a joy to be around, and he cherished every moment he spent with his family. Holidays were especially dear to him, providing precious time to create lasting memories with his loved ones.
Those left to honor Melvin’s memory include his loving wife Joanne; his daughters Gail (Mitch) Marshall of Lowden, IA; Julie Ehrecke of Muscatine, IA; Lori (Dave) Imming of Blue Grass, IA, and Jill Puck of Blue Grass, IA; his grandchildren: Brad Pickett of Blue Grass, IA; Randi (John) Rhine of Savannah, GA; Danielle (Dustin) Waters of Ankeny, IA; Vaughn (Jordan) Ehrecke of Dixon, IA; Spencer (Sarah) Ripperger of Blue Grass, IA; Jordan (Justin) Parchert of Illinois City, IL; Kylie (Tabari) Marshall of Scottsdale, AZ; Madison (Dylan) Marshall of Scottsdale, AZ; Carly (Kirby) Hady of San Diego, CA; and Kennedy Imming of Blue Grass, IA; his great-grandchildren Olivia (Zach) Waters, Zane Waters, Cael Ehrecke, Piper Ehrecke, Reagan Parchert, Rylee Parchert, Huxson Ripperger, Weston Ripperger, Sloan Hady, and his newest great-granddaughter, who is due to be born in October; his brothers Ralph (Pat) Puck of Durant, IA; and Donald (Benita) Puck of Des Moines, IA; and his many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Bernetta Puck; his son-in-law, Stephen Ehrecke; and his grandson, Corey Michael Pickett.
Mel’s legacy will continue in the hearts of those who knew him, and he will be deeply missed by family and friends.
