Maurice “Butch” Holst, 74, of Davenport, passed away Saturday, May 3, 2025, at The University of Iowa Hospital, Iowa City.
Visitation will be from 12-1:30pm on Friday May 9, 2025, at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport. Burial with military honors will follow at National Cemetery, Rock Island. Memorials may be made to the family.
Maurice Lynn Holst was born August 25, 1950, in Davenport, to Dorothy Winfield and was raised by his mother and her husband Keith Holst. He was united in marriage to Dawn Marie Doyle in 2000.
He was a Vietnam Veteran and served in the Army from 1969- 1972. He was in Vietnam and Indochina from December of 1969 to November of 1970. He was honorably discharged and received the Vietnam Service Medal with 3 Bronze Service Stars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Sharpshooter (Rifle) badge.
He had been a mechanic at Caterpillar, a security guard for Securitas, and had worked as a locksmith until a stroke forced him to retire.
Butch loved riding across country on his Harley-Davidson. When slowing down at home he enjoyed working and rebuilding bikes, He always had ideas to invent something new and learned everything about locksmithing and was able to speak fluently 9 languages. He loved his dog “Bear”, and watching Old Westerns super loud on the TV.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife Dawn; children Kelly (Larry) Showens Jr, James Holst, Elaine (Travis) McDaniels; stepson John Weredick; twenty grandchildren; five great grandchildren; mother Dorothy Holst; siblings Terry Holst, Brian Holst, Diane Holst Cone; and many nieces and nephews.
