Matthew Costello, 81, of Eldridge, died Friday, November 7, 2025 at MercyOne-Genesis Medical Center, Davenport following a heart attack. He was comforted by family during his last journey.
Funeral services and Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 10, 2025 at St. Ann Catholic Church, Long Grove. Burial will be in St. Ann Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2 until 5 p.m. Sunday at St. Ann’s with the Rosary offered by the St. Ann’s Knights of Columbus at the conclusion of the visitation. An additional visitation will be held from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. Monday at church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the North Scott Food Pantry, St. Ann’s Knights of Columbus, or St. Ann’s Parish. Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Matt was born on July 4, 1944 in rural McCausland, Iowa, a son of John L. and Catherine A. (Grabbe) Costello. He graduated from North Scott High School in 1962. Matt was united in marriage to Shirley M. Wiese on June 24, 1967 at St. Ann’s. She preceded him in death on August 7, 2022. Matt later was united in marriage to Charlene (Noel) Twigg on October 13, 2024 at St. Ann’s.
Matt took tremendous joy in his 59 years running Costello Auction Service. He started small with just he and Shirley but grew over time to include many of their family and friends. Matt had great pride in donating his talent and time to anyone who was in need. He also worked in the trucking business for many years including H.F. Kroeger Trucking, R.J. Blanche Trucking, H & W Motorexpress, John Deere Parts, and ending his career with Medic EMS.
Matt was currently serving as the Grand Knight of the St. Ann’s Knights of Columbus Council.
Those left to honor his memory are his wife, Charlene; children: Yvonne (Phil) Van Blaricom, all of Eldridge, and Brian (Lisa) Costello, Park View; grandchildren: Hunter (Kayla), Dillon, Lauren Van Blaricom, Chelsea (Christian) LaCarte, and Tyler Costello; great-grandchildren: Kamryn, Lainey, Baker, Kai, Sage, and Kamp; siblings: Rita (Dave) Smith, Bonaparte, Iowa, Sharon (Ted) Spainhower, Preston, Iowa, Joe Costello, Davenport; sisters-in-law, and brother-in-law, Connie Costello, Springfield, Illinois, Carol (Kenny) Keckler, Davenport, and Bill Wiese, Robbins, Iowa; many nieces and nephews; Charlene’s children: Lori Ewoldt (Brad), Lonnie (Shannon) Twigg, and Lea (Eric) Rains; her grandchildren: Moriah Ewoldt, Markisa (Dustin) Tweed, Morgan, Makylee (River), Malainie, and Mashaila Ewoldt, Jordanne, Zach, and Carson Twigg, Alyssa, Faith, and Dana Rains; her great-grandchildren: Braxton and Nina Tweed.
In addition to his wife, Shirley, Matt was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings: Mary (Bill) Bennett, Pat (Arlen) Kroeger, Frank (Elma) Costello, and John R. Costello; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Russel Wiese and Janet Dinter. May they rest in peace.
The Costello family would like to thank the nurses and staff at MercyOne-Genesis for all of the compassionate and loving care given to Matt during his final days.
