Mary Helen Smiley

January 22, 1938 — July 11, 2025

Davenport

Mary Helen Smiley passed away on July 11,2025 in Davenport. IA, surrounded by family and friends. Helen was born on January 22, 1938 to Robert and Elizabeth (Day) Lockhart in Bloomington, IL.

One of four sisters, she left an indelible mark on everyone she met throughout her distinguished life. Her career was characterized by her pioneering spirit, having served as a professor and administrator -- including ascending to the position of athletic director over an entire athletic department at a time when women were mainly athletic directors for women's programs only.

She earned her undergraduate degree at DePauw, Master's at Ball State, and PhD at Iowa... while a doctoral student, she helped establish the women's athletic program at the University of Iowa. She later served as an Assistant Athletic Director at the University of North Dakota and as Athletic Director at Western Illinois University. Her dedication to and impact on athletics have earned her a place in five Athletic Halls of Fame, as well as having an annual award named in her honor.

Beyond her professional achievements, Helen was a woman of profound kindness and warmth. She was known for her loving nature, always making those around her feel at ease. A true life-force, she found purpose in serving others and was a dedicated volunteer throughout her life. Her interests were as vibrant as her personality.

She was a proud sorority sister of Delta Zeta and cultivated lasting friendships throughout her life. She especially enjoyed music and singing, participating in the Sweet Adelines chorus and in barbershop quartets. She enjoyed following multiple sports teams that she had a personal interest in, including following former coaches and players whom she knew.

In addition to athletics and sports, she also enjoyed knitting and competing with family and friends playing various word games.

She is survived by her son, Doug (Macomb, IL); sisters Barbara Lockhart (North Salt Lake City, UT) and Bobbie (Patrick) Kurivial (Leesburg, FL): and nephew Jim Bennett (Lake Placid, NY).

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; husband Larry Smiley; sister Joan Lockhart; nephew Ted Kurivial; and special friend Clarence Bloomquist.

Cremation rites have been extended, and no formal services will be held.

As we remember Helen Smiley, we celebrate a life filled with achievement, generosity, and an unwavering commitment to uplifting others. Her legacy as a pioneer in women's sports, a cherished family member, and a devoted friend will continue to inspire all who knew her. Thank you to the Senior Star staff and residents for the love and care they provided Helen in her eight years of living there.
