Mary Elizabeth Kiefer, 81, of Davenport, Iowa, passed away on October 15, 2025, at MercyOne Hospital in Davenport.
Mary was born on February 26, 1944, in Washington, Iowa, to Charles and Adeline (Peck) Drish of Brighton. She lived a life rooted in faith, love, and quiet strength.
Mary earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Iowa State University and pursued graduate studies at Temple University. Mary began her career working with children with special needs through the University of Iowa before teaching kindergarten at Harrison Elementary School in Davenport.
On July 11, 1970, she married Carl Kiefer at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in East Pleasant Plain, Iowa. When her calling as a mother began, Mary left teaching to operate a licensed daycare in her home, where she lovingly cared for and influenced countless children and families for 24 years. After retiring, she continued serving her community through volunteer work at McAnthony Window and the Kahl Home.
Mary and Carl enjoyed traveling extensively—often in their motor homes—and spent many winters in Naples, Florida. She cherished her family, adored her grandchildren, and lovingly cared for many dogs over the years.
She is survived by her husband, Carl; four children: Thomas (Mary) Kiefer of Port Byron, IL; Matthew (Stacy) Kiefer of Charleston, SC; Daniel (Alisa) Kiefer of Foley, AL; and Julie (Jeremy) Gacnik of Highlands Ranch, CO; and thirteen grandchildren: Katelyn, Caleb, Hailey, and Carter Kiefer (Port Byron); Mackenzie, Nolan and Kelsey Kiefer (Charleston); Kaylee and Jacob Kiefer (Foley); and Madeline, Luke, Amy, and Elle Gacnik (Highlands Ranch).
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Theodore (Ted) Drish; and an infant son, Michael. May they rest in peace.
