Mary Ann died Wednesday, February 4, 2026, at the Kahl Home in Davenport.
Mary Ann Chervinko was born on May 10, 1931, in Coalton, Illinois, a daughter of John and Anna (Geletka) Chervinko. From an early age, Mary Ann felt called to a life of faith and service. She took vows as a Sister of Charity of the Incarnate Word, and her ministry spanned from 1951 until 1969, primarily as an educator in Mexico, where she touched countless lives through her commitment to teaching and her compassion for others.
In 1969, she moved to St. Louis to begin a new chapter, working for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Following her father’s death in 1990, she returned to Cicero, Illinois, to help care for her mother. After her mother’s passing in 2001, Mary Ann moved to Davenport, Iowa, where she purchased a condominium, she was very proud of and enjoyed being close to family.
Mary Ann cherished her life in Davenport. Her weekly routine often included grocery trips with Dianne Schmohe, followed by a well-loved visit to Village Inn. She found great joy in watching her great-niece and great-nephew grow up—attending their events, celebrating their academic achievements, and taking genuine pride in their accomplishments. She served as sponsor for Zach Wesolowski’s confirmation, a role she held with deep meaning. Aunt Mary truly delighted in celebrating others.
If you had the opportunity to speak with Mary Ann, you could immediately feel her compassion for others and, if you were lucky, enjoy a history lesson along the way. Her memory amazed everyone. She could recognize people by the sound of their voice and recall exact dates and moments with remarkable clarity. Her wisdom was a gift she loved sharing.
Mary Ann was deeply devoted to her Catholic faith. She prayed the rosary daily and continually offered prayers for her family, friends, and anyone she encountered. She loved her time as a resident of the Kahl Home, where she was blessed to receive the Eucharist daily. She formed meaningful friendships in the dining hall, making it a point to greet others each morning—always with her three cups of coffee. She leaves behind a legacy of faith, wisdom, and unwavering love that will continue to guide her family for generations.
Those left to honor her memory include her brother, James Chervinko of Carbondale, Illinois; and her nieces and nephews: Frank Wesolowski of Downers Grove, Illinois; Mary (Jeff) Leadholm of Madison, Wisconsin; David (Maryl) Wesolowski of Chicago, Illinois; Diane (Chris) Smith of Chicago, Illinois; Matthew (Debi) Wesolowski of Davenport, Iowa; Stephanie Chervinko of Chico, California; J.J. (Leah) Chervinko of Durham, North Carolina; and Michael (Daisy) Chervinko of Carbondale, Illinois. She is
also survived by many great-nieces and great-nephews, including Zachary and Aimee, with whom she grew especially close during the final 19 years of her life.
Mary Ann was preceded in death by her parents; her sister and brother-in-law, Ann and Frank Wesolowski; and a sister-in-law, Diana Chervinko. May they rest in peace.
