Lucille Helene Hessling was born on June 17, 1960, in Peoria, Illinois, a daughter of John B. and Claire (Dragon) Hessling. She graduated from Pekin Community High School in 1978; she then went on to Augustana College where she played volleyball and basketball. Following graduation from Augie in 1982 she went to law school at the University of Iowa.  Lucy was united in marriage to Anthony J. “Tony” Valainis on October 11, 1996, at Sacred Heart Cathedral.

Lucy practiced family law for twenty years. Most recently, she worked for Eaton Mission Systems as the Senior Contracts Administrator. Lucy’s life revolved around her family. Her and Tony’s free time was spent watching their children chase their athletic and academic dreams, all over the United States and internationally. She adored her pets and creating a home for her family to gather, especially around the pool. Lucy was an avid chef, who mastered many recipes and never backed down from a challenge in the kitchen. Lucy enjoyed bike riding, playing sand volleyball, playing Skyrim, and driving on long road trips.

Lucy was selfless to her core, she spent her life lifting others up and putting their needs before her own. She left her mark on the world through the many lives she touched, and she lived boldly and authentically, always true to herself.

Those left to honor her memory are her husband, Tony, Davenport; children: Al Spinas-Valainis, Tawain, Emma Valainis, Laramie, Wyoming, and Anthony Valainis, Minneapolis, Minnesota; siblings: John (Mona) Hessling, St. Peters, Missouri, Karen (John) Foster, San Antonio, Texas, Deacon David (Andrea) Hessling, Atoka, Tennessee, Joe (Diane) Hessling, Palm City, Florida, Joan (Jon) Meeks, Davenport, and Mike (Deanna) Hessling, Birchwood, Wisconsin; sisters-in-law: Nina (Stan) DeMay, Blue Grass, Gina (Rod Muilenburg) Valainis, La Grande, Oregon, and Lorita (Mark) Levy, St. Petersburg, Florida; and many adoring nieces and nephews.

Lucy was preceded in death by her parents, an infant brother, Charles, and father-in-law and mother-in-law, John and Molly Valainis. May they rest in peace.
