Kathleen “Kathy” Callahan, 70, of Davenport, died Sunday, December 11, 2022 at The Summit, Bettendorf surrounded by her four sisters.
Graveside services for Kathy will be 11a.m. Thursday, June 15, 2023 at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Davenport followed by a celebration of her life from 12-3pm at The Tangled Wood, 3636 Tanglewood Road, Bettendorf. Friends and family are welcome to attend. Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Kathleen Patricia Callahan was born on March 7, 1952 in Englewood, New Jersey, the second of five daughters born to Edward Henry and Teresa Cecilia (McNeilly) Callahan. Kathy graduated from Purdue University with a degrees in Psychology and Sociology and earned a masters degree in Social Work from the University of Iowa.
Kathy was very dedicated in her work and felt a strong calling to help others. Early in her career she worked in child services and youth group homes; later as a social worker for the State of Iowa in various roles, including child support recovery. She was very proud of this good work and rightly so.
Kathy had a great love for nature, and a passion for gardening. At her home she cultivated a beautiful garden, and supplied numerous birds with their daily meals. Chatting with her neighbors and taking walks kept her active. Country line dancing also brought Kathy great joy and numerous lasting friendships. She enjoyed wonderful lengthy friendships with Assumption High School classmates.
She was civic-minded, interested in public affairs and selflessly volunteered for non-profit causes and assisted local political events.
Kathy is survived by her sisters and brothers-in-law, Terry and Steve Wiese, Ada, Michigan, Jeanne and Steve Wanzek, Ames, Iowa, Lynn Callahan, Schaumburg, Illinois, and Clare and Dave Petersen, Chicago, Illinois; nieces and nephews, Emily (Matt) Reinhart, Patrick (Kate Jonynas) Wiese, Joe (Megan) Wanzek, Melanie (Luke) Dolezal, and Rob Wanzek; great-nieces and great-nephews: Nathan and Cole Reinhart, Liam and Owen Wanzek, and Lydia, Abigail, and Katherine Dolezal.
She was preceded in death by her parents Edward and Teresa.
Memorial donations may be made to Genesis Hospice and the American Heart Association.
