John D. Hawkins

John D. Hawkins, 88, passed away on July 16, 2023 at Genesis Medical Center, East Rusholme Street, Davenport

John was born August 12, 1934 in Davenport. John graduated Davenport High School in 1952. He was proud to have served his country in the U.S. Army from Sept 1953 to Sep 1955. He married Carol Gillooly in June 1956 and was blessed with 67 wonderful years of marriage. She preceded him in death on January 24, 2023. John was employed by the U.S. Postal Service from 1957 to 1990 for 33 years.

John's greatest pride was his family.  John loved the game of golf and played it and watched it on TV whenever he got the chance. He also loved watching NFL football especially his favorite team, the Chicago Bears especially the era of Walter Payton. His favorite pastime was watching his two grandsons, Brandon and Kyle play sports. John and his family took some wonderful vacations throughout the U.S. and abroad. He and his late wife traveled to Hawaii, Europe, The Holy Land, (which John thought was his best trip ever), Mexico and Canada. John loved Arizona and built a winter home in Westbrook Village, Peoria, Arizona. In 2000, they moved back to Davenport so they could be closer to their family and to attend their grandson's many sporting events. He enjoyed playing cards and Dominos with friends and family

John was a former member of the Elks. He was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, Davenport. John loved his Lord. He faithfully read scriptures daily.

John will be forever remembered by his loving twin daughters, Patricia (Tom) Steinbrecher, Davenport; Susan (Stu) Grendahl, Madison, WI; 2 grandsons, Brandon (Hilleri) Steinbrecher and Kyle Steinbrecher; 3 great granddaughters, Baileigh, Berkli and Brinley; sisters Nancy Sparks, San Antonio, FL; Diane (Jim) Tiedje, Davenport; many nieces, and a nephew.

John was preceded in death by his wife, Carol, his parents, stepmother, and sister, Carol Shepherd of Hannibal, MO.

The family would like to express special thanks to Genesis East Hospital ICU, especially nurses Kate, Paz, Joe and the rest of the ICU staff for their wonderful care and support. John's family would also like to extend a special gratefulness to Pastor Eddie Cabrera and Victoria.

When Tomorrow Starts Without Me

When tomorrow starts without me, please try to understand, that an angel came and called my name and took me by the hand; The angel said my place was ready; in Heaven far above, and that I'd have to leave behind all those I dearly love. But when I walked through Heaven's Gates, I felt so much at home, for God looked down, smiled at me, and told me "Welcome Home." So when tomorrow starts without me, don't think we're far apart, for every time you think of me, I'm right there in your heart.
