John Thomas Dean

John Thomas Dean, a beloved husband, father, brother, and friend, passed away on September 14, 2025, at Hampshire Memorial Hospital in Romney, WV. Visitation will be held on September 22, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport. A funeral service will be held on September 23, 2025, at 10:00 AM, followed by burial at the Rock Island Arsenal National Cemetery.

John was born on December 6, 1947, to Virgil and Laura Dean. John graduated from Davenport Assumption in 1966 and furthered his education at Air University Tech School. He married the love of his life, Jill Schmidt, on June 17, 1967 and she blessed him with three children.

He proudly served in the Air Force during the Vietnam War, a commitment that shaped his character and instilled in him a deep sense of duty. After his military service, he embarked on a distinguished career. For 15 years, John held the position of Traffic Manager with the KI Willis Corporation. He then transitioned to becoming an Employment Service Supervisor with Handicap Development for an additional 10 years. He officially retired in 2009, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and dedication.

Throughout his life, John was known for his warm personality and remarkable sense of humor. He had an exceptional ability to make others feel at ease, which made him not only approachable but also deeply cherished by those who knew him. A proud member of the Knights of Columbus, John actively participated in community and veteran affairs. He served with honor as a member of the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 172, located in Cumberland, Maryland. His dedication to these organizations exemplified his commitment to service both during and after his military career.

John is survived by his beloved wife, Jill; his sons, David (Shawna) Dean of Fruitland, IA, and Alan (Teresa) Dean of Hudsonville, MI; his daughter, Jennifer (Mark) Ashby of Springfield, WV; his grandchildren, Scott (Faith), Katie (Josh), Josie, Scarlett, Nathan, and Trevor.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Laura Dean, and sister Sharon Borck. John lived a full life characterized by devotion to his family, professionalism in his career, and service to his country. He leaves behind memories filled with love and laughter that will continue to resonate with his family and friends.
