Joann Berenger was born on August 26, 1940, in Rock Island, Illinois, a daughter of John “Jack” and Lola (Whan) Berenger. She graduated from Rock Island High School in 1958 and attended Western Illinois University. She married James “Jim” Van Fossen in 1959 and from this union were born Jamie, Julie, and Jill. Joann has shared the last 35 years plus with Tom Huot.
Joann was a longtime para-educator in the Davenport Community School District, retiring from Madison Elementary in 2014.
Joann was a brilliant woman with a wonderful sense of humor that brought joy to all who knew her. She never spoke ill of others and would not tolerate gossip or unkind words in her presence. Family was the center of Joann's life, and she especially treasured the time spent with her beloved grandchildren. Friday nights were reserved for dinner with Tom, most often at Harold's on the Rock, a tradition they both cherished. Joann enjoyed gathering with her card clubs and looked forward to spending time with her lifelong friends, her "birthday buddies," Sandy Ernat and Teresa Huntley who preceded her in death. She loved taking drives in the country, being outdoors, and listening to music. She had always dreamed of becoming an actress, Joann realized that dream when she appeared as an extra in a film shot in Davenport, “Bix: The Interpretation of a Legend” by acclaimed Italian director, Pupi Avati.
Those left to honor her memory are her significant other, Tom Huot, Bettendorf; children and their spouses: Jamie (Dawn) Van Fossen, Ankeny and Jill (Jason) Decker, Bettendorf; grandchildren: John (Katie) Cawley, Rachel (James) Adams, Hannah (Adam Sweeney) Van Fossen, Heather (William) Borchard, Jillian (Kyle) Spies, Jake Cawley, Nicholas and Noah Decker; great-grandchildren: Lola Adams, Grace Cawley, William Borchard, IV., and James Borchard; many nieces and nephews, cousins, and her beloved sister-in-law, Barb Van Fossen,
Joann was preceded in death by her daughter and son-in-law, Julie and John Cawley, her parents, and a brother, John Berenger.
We would like to thank the Nurse’s and CNA’s at Harmony for the care of our mother.
