Jerry Matthys

November 24, 1939 — February 2, 2022

Dr. Gerard “Jerry” Matthys of Prairie Village, Kansas passed away at his home on February 2, 2022.  He passed away after a long and arduous road with cancer.

A service was held at Johnson County Chapel on Wednesday, February 9, 2022 at 12 pm.  A burial service for the immediate family was held at Corinth Cemetery immediately following the service. The visitation was from 6-8pm on Tuesday February 8th at the Chapel. Memorials may be made to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Kansas City 2502 Cherry Street Kansas City, MO 64108.

Jerry, “Dr. Foot” was born November 24, 1939 in Davenport, Iowa the son of Bernard and Agnes (VanCamp) Matthys. Jerry spent time in the seminary, pursued undergraduate education at Creighton University and a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) at Illinois College of Podiatric Medicine in Chicago. He pursued and received a Doctor of Medicine (MD) at  American University of Montserrat School of Medicine.  Jerry practiced podiatry for thirty years and passionately served his patients. He instituted shoe drives that provided shoes to the underserved and led multiple March of Dimes charity events.

He was united in marriage to Ellen Goldstein of Kansas City, Missouri on November 15, 1967 in Chicago, Illinois. Since that time, they continued their love for the city in which they met. He co-owned a bar, Tom & Jerry’s, while in podiatry school, which served them as much as their customers.

His greatest joy was serving his family.  He was father of five and the beloved grandfather of nine grandchildren. He blessed his family with his love of providing. He enthusiastically spent time cooking, grilling and shopping for family meals. As ‘the food pusher’ everyone was always welcome at his table. He expressed his deep and committed love through caregiving; especially his grandchildren and to Bernard Matthys and Pearl Goldstein later in life.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Ellen and children Brian (Molly) Matthys, Mission Hills, Kansas, Julie Manley, Prairie Village, Kansas, Jenny Thomson, Kansas City, Missouri, Amy (Joe) Hoglund, Overland Park, Kansas and Brad (Emily) Matthys, Brandon, Mississippi. He will be so tremendously missed by his grandchildren Madison, Sage, Piper, Hana, Cabin, Christian, Sterling, Elsie and William.  He is also survived by his siblings, Bernie (Barbara), Chicago, Illinois, Rose Marie Quattrocchi (Dr. Joe),  Columbus, Nebraska, Don (Gale) Nolensville, Tennessee, Bob (Linda), Davenport, Iowa, Mary Ann Bindley (Bill), Naples, Florida, Paul (Mary Kay), Nashville, Tennessee, and Joe (Tara), Des Moines, Washington, brother-in-law, Jim (Jessie) McMillin, Bartonville, Illinois, and sister-in-law Patsy Matthys, Davenport, Iowa.  He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Diane McMillin and Christine Matthys and brothers, Brother John Matthys, CSsR and Chris Matthys.
