James E. Poggenpohl, 82, of Walcott, died Friday, January 20, 2023 at Trinity, Bettendorf.  Private family services will take place in the Rock Island National Cemetery, Arsenal Island with military honors.  Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.  Memorials may be made to the Walcott American Legion Post 548 where he was a member.

 

Jim was born on May 16, 1940 in Iowa City, a son of Elmer J. and Lois (Hanrahan) Poggenpohl. He served our country in the Navy during the Vietnam War primarily aboard the aircraft carrier , USS Ticonderoga. Jim was united in marriage to Margaret Coiner on October 28, 1964 in Rock Island.  She preceded him in death on December 6, 2014 following 50 years of marriage.

 

Jim spent many years as a truck driver for Louis Rich.  He was proud of all his safe driving awards that he earned during his career.  He enjoyed camping and working on anything with a motor. Jim also tinkered with woodworking and built some champion derby cars during his time. He was a sucker for a deal and owned a ton of “seen it on tv” products…..in bulk!

 

Survivors include his children: Jamie (Stephanie) Poggenpohl, Walcott, Mike (Victoria) Poggenpohl, and Anne (Chris) Jackson, all of Davenport; grandchildren: Casey and Amber McCullouch, Zacharie (Victoria) and Tyler Poggenpohl, Race, Arley, Datcher, and Cambria Poggenpohl, and Damon Jackson; a brother-in-law, Gary Kennedy, Riverside, Iowa.

 

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Richard McCullouch, his parents, and siblings, Joan Kennedy and John Poggenpohl.
