James W. “Jim” Landhauser, 99, of Davenport, passed away August 19, 2023 at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf.  

 

Funeral services and Mass of Christian Burial for Jim will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 24, 2023 at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, Davenport.  The Mass will be livestreamed by visiting St. Paul the Apostle Facebook Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery with military honors.  Visitation will be held Wednesday from 5 until 7 p.m. at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport.  Additional visitation will be held at the church on Thursday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the Mass.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Honor Flight of the Quad Cities, Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, or a charity of your choice.

 

James William Landhauser was born on July 10, 1924 in Davenport, a son of William and Adelaide (Otten) Landhauser.  He attended Davenport High School and worked three years at the Rock Island Arsenal before proudly serving in the Air Force during World War II.

 

After his military services, he worked at ALCOA as an overhead crane operator, retiring in 1987 after 37 ½ years.

 

Jim was united in marriage to Jane Denger on February 7, 1953.  Their three children are Gary, Mark, and Susan.  Jane preceded him in death on May 4, 1980.  He married Ileen Hesse on August 10, 1985, becoming a great “bonus” Dad to Chip and Barbara. Jim and Ileen spent 38 years together.

 

Jim loved to travel, enjoying destinations near and far.  He loved attending Iowa – Iowa State football games, Cub and Cardinal baseball games, Circa 21 dinner theater and his grandchildren’s activities.  He enjoyed a challenging game of euchre and playing golf.   He treasured gatherings of immediate family, friends and neighbors.  He looked forward to spring and summer when he was an observer in the Pro Bass Fishing Circuit, year after year, collecting hat after hat!   

 

Jim was a member of the American Legion Post 26 and ALCOA Retirees Club.

 

Those left to honor his memory are his loving and devoted wife, Ileen; sons Gary (Jeude) Landhauser, Mark (Deborah) Landhauser, daughter Susan (Ben) Villareal; bonus children Chip (Jody) Hesse, and Barbara DeForest; nine grandchildren: Ben (Cassie) Landhauser, Jon (Mikayla) Landhauser, Danielle Newburn, Alicia (Alex) Green, Nick (Anna) Villareal, Sharon Hesse (John Forbes), Sarah (Zack) Walker, Zach (Laura) DeForest, Khristina (Vern) Woodford, bonus grandchild, Brent Pruse; sixteen great-grandchildren: Gwen, June, Luca, Charlie, Beckham, Kylan, Breede, Greenlee, Nora, Elise, Charlotte, Clara, Brooklyn, Max and Brody; niece and nephew, Carol (Dick) Krekeler, and John (Linda) Rose.

 

In addition to his wife, Jane, he was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Glenn DeForest, great-granddaughter, Raylynn DeForest, his parents, and sisters Marjorie (Barney) Rose and Mary Jane Landhauser.  May they rest in peace. 

 

Jim’s family would like to thank Genesis Hospice and the nurses, aides, staff, volunteers and Dr. Sorensen at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House for all their wonderful care the past nine weeks, and also to the Patriot Guard for joining to honor Jim on his 99th birthday this past July.
