James P. (Bippy) Bippus passed away on Tuesday, May 16, at Silvercrest Garner Independent Living after living a long and joyful life. He was 98 years old at time of his passing. Always wearing a smile and sharing a positive word, he will be deeply missed by his family and many friends. Per his wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. Private graveside services will take place at a later date at the Rock Island Arsenal National Cemetery.
As a resident of Silvercrest, Bippy loved a good bridge game, playing dominos, bingo, euchre, or poker. Friday afternoon happy hours were a favorite.
Jim was born July 25, 1924 in Newburgh, Indiana to Henry Bippus and Katherine Padgett Bippus. He married Mary Louise Elder on September 2, 1946. She preceded him in death in February, 2008.
He was a WWII veteran and was part of the invasion at Omaha Beach on D-Day. He graduated from Indiana University and worked for Nichols Home Shield and then Eagle Signal, transferring from Davenport, Iowa to Austin, Texas during that time. In 2020, he moved back to Davenport to be closer to family.
Survivors include sons David and Jerry (Lori) Bippus of Davenport, IA, daughter Ellen Cassatt (Dennis) of Howe, TX, four grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, daughter-in-law, Kohnne Bippus, and grandson, Ben Bippus.
The family would like to thank the residents and staff at Silvercrest for their friendship and support.
