Funeral services celebrating the life of Jack McDermott, 85, of Bettendorf, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, April 24, 2026, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Bettendorf. The Mass livestream may be viewed by clicking this link: Our Lady of Lourdes Facebook Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Thursday at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport, with a Rosary offered at 6:30 p.m. Cremation will be accorded following visitation. Memorials may be made to the St. Joan of Arc Foundation.
Mr. McDermott passed away Sunday, April 19, 2026, at MercyOne Genesis, Davenport.
John Joseph McDermott III was born January 29, 1941, in Davenport to John “Mick” and Kathryn “Kay” (Ruefer) McDermott Jr. He graduated from Assumption High School class of 1959 and earned his bachelor’s degrees in physics and math from St. Ambrose College. He was united in marriage to Jayne Johnson on August 16, 1974, at St. Anthony’s in Davenport.
Prior to his retirement in 2004, Jack had been a medical administrator for the Davenport Clinic and Orthopedic Surgery Associates, and Steindler Orthopedic in Iowa City. He was a member of Medical Group Managers and held various offices throughout the years including Midwest President and national board member. In 1994 he was named Iowa Medical Manager of the year.
Jack loved to golf, wintering in Florida, photography, hanging out by his pool, smoking cigars with friends, and was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and St. Louis Cardinals.
Survivors include his wife, Jayne; sister Judy (Barry) Keefe of Cleveland, OH; sister-in-law Johanna (Linda Free) Johnson; brother-in-law Rock Johnson; stepfather-in-law Art Lopez; adopted families Justin and Christin Hazen and their daughter Mary Grace, Andy and Kristina Katherman and their children Drew and Tenley; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
