Gerald "Jerry" Bruce Lovell, 76, of Bettendorf, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 27, 2026, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, surrounded by his beloved wife and daughters.

Jerry was born on May 19, 1950, in Keokuk, Iowa, to Raymond and Betty (Armstrong) Lovell. It was there that he met and married the love of his life, Judy Riter, on May 10, 1969, at St. Peter's Church. Together they built a life centered entirely on family, unconditional love, raising three children, and celebrating 57 wonderful years of marriage.

Jerry dedicated more than 45 years to the automotive industry, beginning his career in his twenties. He worked many of those years as a car salesman and retired as finance manager. His charismatic personality and genuine gift for connecting with people made him unforgettable. Jerry truly never met a stranger. He could start a conversation with anyone—often by telling a mischievous, completely fabricated story just to break the ice.

Although he enjoyed a successful career, Jerry's greatest passions were found outside of work. He loved staying active through golf and racquetball and never passed up the chance to catch a good movie. But his favorite place was the kitchen. Cooking was his love language, and he delighted in feeding family, friends, neighbors, and anyone who happened to stop by. He believed no one should ever leave his home hungry, and there was always enough food—and leftovers—for everyone.

Jerry devoted himself fully to his favorite role: Grandpa. He was his grandchildren's biggest fan, faithfully attending games, performances, and milestones. His backyard became a legendary "resort" for grandkid campouts, complete with a swimming pool and an old-fashioned soda machine that accepted real quarters. One of the grand kids’ most treasured traditions began during their “campout” nights where each grandchild excitedly searched through his shirt drawer to claim one of his oversized T-shirts as their pajamas.

Jerry was a gifted storyteller whose tales grew more colorful with every retelling. His family often joked that you never quite knew where the truth ended and the story began—and that was part of his charm. He found joy in life's simplest moments and never asked for much. More than anything, he treasured time with the people he loved. A visit, a phone call, a family gathering, or simply having everyone together was all he ever wanted.

Jerry's greatest legacy is the family he adored. He is survived by his loving wife, Judy Lovell; his children, Carrie (Jeffrey) Peters, Katie (CJ) Johnson, and Spencer Lovell; his cherished grandchildren, Alexis Logan, Abbie (Cole) Jackson, Austin (Emily) Peters, Alec (Madison) Peters, Ashlyn Peters, Anne Peters, Thurston Lovell, Paige Lovell, and Vanessa Johnson; his beloved great-grandchildren, Jax, Branx, Lexon, Ava, Zoe, and Benaiah; and a great-granddaughter due in September. He is also survived by countless friends and extended family whose lives were made brighter by his warmth, generosity, humor, and enormous heart.

The measure of Jerry's life was never found in what he accumulated, but in the people, he loved, the meals he shared, the laughter he created, and the memories his family will carry with them forever.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Betty Lovell.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, August 8, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home in Davenport, Iowa, followed immediately by a memorial service at 11:30 a.m.

In honor of Jerry's generous spirit and lifelong love of cooking for others, memorials may be made to the River Bend Food Bank.
