Obituary

Frederick D. “Fred” Van Hoosier, 94, of Eldridge, passed away in Davenport on May 9, 2626.

Funeral services and Mass of Christian Burial for Fred will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 18, 2026, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Davenport. The Mass will be livestreamed by visiting Fred’s obituary at www.hmdfuneralhome.com. Burial will follow in the National Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal with military honors. Visitation will be Sunday from 2 until 4 p.m. at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport. In lieu of flowers memorials, may be made to the Donahue American Legion or Quad Cities Veterans Outreach Center.

Fred Van Hoosier was born on November 14, 1931, in Northwood, Iowa, a son of Charles and Barbara (Popp) Van Hoosier, Sr. He served in the Navy during the Korean War from 1951 to 1955 on the USS Cascade AD16 and USS Stockholm. Fred married Martha Bulin on June 21, 1985. He retired from Bob Ericksen Chevrolet in June of 1995. Fred was an active member of Larry M. Gronewold American Legion in Donahue serving in various positions including Commander for several years. Additionally, he belonged to the Elks, DAV, Korean War Association, Plus 60 Club and was a BIX volunteer for many years. Fred participated in the 22nd Honor Flight in April 2013 alongside several local Korean War veterans.

He is survived by his wife, Martha Van Hoosier, children: Jill (Jeff) Venjohn and Todd Van Hoosier all of Daniel Island, South Carolina, David (Michelle) Bulin of Arlington, Iowa, and Lori Lindsey of Eldridge, grandchildren Erik, Colin, Caitlin, Quincy, Joseph, Shannon, Morgan, Madison, Kiera and Dakota, great-grandchildren: Annabelle, Charlie and River, and sister-in law, Joanne Bemus of Culpeper, Virginia. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren meant the world to him.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Tammy L. Van Hoosier, sister, Frances Wingerter, brothers: Charles (Nancy) Van Hoosier, Arthur Van Hoosier, Donald (Gertrude) "Pickles" Van Hoosier and a brother-in-law, Herman Bemus.
