Eugene Driel

Eugene P. “Gene” Van Driel, 81, of Davenport, passed away Saturday, December 9, 2017 at St. Mary Healthcare, Davenport. Per his wish, the rite of cremation will be accorded and burial will take place at 1:00 p.m. Friday, December 15, 2017 at the Rock Island National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. If you would like to join the procession to the cemetery, please be at the Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home at 12:30 p.m. Friday.

Eugene Peter Van Driel was born April 9, 1936 in rural Rock Valley, IA, a son of Peter and Esther (Miller) Van Driel.

He graduated from Wartburg College in 1957 and then joined the United States Navy. He received his officers commission in 1958. Following his discharge from the Navy, he studied at the University of Iowa and received his Juris Doctorate in 1963. He then went on to open his own law practice in Davenport and eventually retired in 2005 after serving over 6000 clients.

Gene was a past-President of the Scott County Jaycees and once met Richard Nixon and had coffee and donuts with President Eisenhower in Newport, RI.

Survivors include his brothers David Van Driel (Kate), Scottsdale, AZ and James Van Driel (Barb), Eden Prairie, MN.
