Duane Mabry, 89, of Davenport, and formerly of Blue Grass, passed away Monday, December 2, 2024, at MercyOne Genesis, Davenport. Visitation will be 9-10 am on Friday, December 6, 2024, at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport. Graveside services with military honors will follow at National Cemetery, Rock Island. Those wishing to attend should meet at the funeral home by 10 am. Memorials may be made to the VFW, Wounded Warrior Project, or your favorite charity.
Duane Reaves Mabry was born August 23, 1935, in Lowell, AR, the son of Loy and Vera (Brown) Mabry. He earned his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Arkansas. He was united in marriage to Margaret Stewart in 1958 in Texas. He later married Dana Combs on May 23, 1980, in Davenport and she preceded him in death on May 11, 2013.
Duane spent most of his professional career as a logistics officer in the US Army and upon his discharge joined the reserves, becoming a Reserves Commander, and retiring as a Lt. Col. He also worked in procurement for the Rock Island Arsenal, retiring in 1993. He served in Vietnam and was awarded the Bronze Star.
He loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing, and traditional bowhunting. He made his own bows and arrows and was the owner of Mabry Sporting Supplies. He was a member of the Davenport Valley Archers, holding several positions over the years. He was an avid reader, a lifelong learner, and a perfectionist. He could build and fix anything and enjoyed woodworking, gardening, and was a great cook.
Those left to honor his memory include his children and their spouses Sidney (Nelson) Merritt, Longmont, CO, Kelly (Jim) Hatz, Bailey, CO, Michael (Leana) Mabry, Henderson, NV; step-children Tracy (Tom) Buzzell, Naples, FL, Dan (Joannie) Schneider,, Belle Plain, MN; grandchildren Jessica (Mark), Sam, Ben, Shelby, Jake, Ryan, C.J. (Zach), Logan, Charlie; great grandchildren Porter and Bowie; and special friend Gladys Conner.
The family would like to thank and acknowledge Joann Garlough for the wonderful care given to Duane.
In addition to his wife Dana, he was preceded in death by his parents.
