Dennis was born on September 6, 1945, in Holdridge, Nebraska, to Eugene H. Byrne and Dorothy L. (Coburn) Byrne. Dennis graduated from West High School in 1965. Following high school, he proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1966 to 1968, stationed aboard the USS Yancey.
Dennis, known to family and friends as "Denny," worked for Heat and Frost Insulators Local 81 in Cedar Rapids from 1969 until his retirement in 2005. Throughout his career, he served as a union steward, executive board member, and business manager.
Denny enjoyed riding motorcycles, especially his Harley-Davidson, and traveled extensively throughout the western United States. He was also passionate about classic cars and trucks, weightlifting, and, in his younger years, boating and water skiing. Above all else, he cherished time spent with his grandchildren, whom he loved dearly.
He is survived by his daughters, Jessica (Joshua) Drake of Sherrard, Illinois, and Jennifer (Ryan O'Mary) Byrne of Rock Island; grandchildren Harper, Lennon, and Penelope Drake, Nickolaus Hagerbaumer, Charlotte and Riley Gass, and Benjamin O'Mary; brother Randy (Kimberly) Byrne of Letts, Iowa; sister Sondra (Dennis) Nelson of Enumclaw, Washington; nieces and nephews Erin (Garrett) Burchett, Kyle (Stephanie) Byrne, Shawn Nelson, and Kristine Olson; and great-niece and great-nephew Jana and Mitchell Burchett.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
