David Paul Meyer was born May 17, 1944, in rural Allamakee, County, IA, to Albert and Sarah (Holmes) Meyer. He graduated from Waukon High School in 1962 and attended DeVry Technical Institute from 1962-64. David proudly served his country as a member of the United States Air Force from 1964-68 and was discharged as Airman First Class. Following his service, he did construction work on I-35 between Clear Lake and the Minnesota border during the summer of 1969. He then worked for Libby-Owen Ford for 10 years before he went on to build a long and steady career as an electrician at John Deere - Waterloo, where he dedicated 30 years of hard work, retiring in 2009.

Life, for David, was meant to be explored. He managed to visit every state in the country except Alaska, and everywhere he went, he found a story worth remembering. A true history buff, he had a knack for sharing details and lessons from the past with those around him, especially his nephew John Moore.

One of his greatest joys, however, was closer to home. He cherished the time he spent with his granddaughters, whether it was cheering them on, telling them stories, or simply enjoying their company. In his quieter moments, he loved watching history programs, NASCAR and basketball, especially when Caitlin Clark took the court.

His own love story began on a blind date, though not in the usual way. His future wife, Paula Thilges, wasn’t feeling well that night, but decided he deserved a second chance. It turned out to be the best decision she ever made. The two were married on April 22, 1972, in St. Joseph, IA, and built a beautiful life together filled with love, laughter, and devotion.

David will be remembered for his dedication, his humor, his love of learning, and above all, the deep love he held for his family.

He is survived by his wife, Paula; daughter, Renee Meyer Ernst; granddaughters Ariana and Jaden Ernst, all of Davenport; sisters Ardell (Rollin) Biegalski of Cedar Rapids and LaVonne (Dan) Volle of Colorado Springs, CO; and numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Bernice (Roy) Moore, Doris (Floyd) Plummer, Carol (Roy) Moore; brothers Ferris (Mary Lou) Meyer, Albert (Monte) Meyer, and Marlend (Sylvia) Meyer.
