With deepest sorrow we announce the passing of Daniel Robert Stahl of Davenport, Iowa, on May 15, 2025, after struggling with Parkinson’s disease and dementia for a number of years. Daniel was born on March 7, 1950, in Clinton, IA, the son of the late Robert Herman and Loraine Elinor (Stapleton) Stahl of Davenport. Dan spent the majority of his childhood years in Bettendorf where he graduated from the Bettendorf High School. He continued his education at Iowa State University with a degree in Landscape Architecture which became his lifelong career.
Dan is survived by his wife, Kristi Bedell-Stahl, his brothers, Roy Stahl (Moline, IL) and Alan Stahl (and wife Teresa (Newhouse), St. Peters, MO), and his children Jennifer Stahl, Clay (Nicole) Bedell, Aaron (Karrie) Bedell and Kara (Michael) Greer. Dan was the proud grandfather to seven (Dustin, Brandon, Brian, Sydney, Lauren, David, and Ridgley) and a myriad of nieces, nephews, and great-children of both. Dan also had many special “fur babies” over the years that were such an important part of his life: Rinky, Penny, Skeeter, Cassie, and Sammie. “Pa” was always known for having a grandbaby or a fur baby in his arms. Dan is predeceased by his parents and his sister-in-law Kathleen (Kaki) Bedell.
When talking with Dan, you would find yourself discussing plants, music, ‘The Bix’, volunteering, and friends. Dan loved landscaping and spent most of his adult life working with plants, either as a landscaper, or owning his own nursery (with Kristi) for many years. Many friends and family members were the grateful recipients of one of Dan’s beautiful landscape designs.
If there was a party, Dan was singing! He was involved with chorus in high school and at his church growing up. Later, he enjoyed singing with a good friend Randy, and the Chord Busters. One of Dan’s favorite games was Name That Tune or Name That Artist. He was a master at 60’s and 70’s music trivia! He enjoyed all kinds of music and music venues, but one of his favorites was Jimmy Buffet. He and Kristi were forever “Parrot Heads” frequenting his concerts and knew his tunes by heart.
Dan was deeply involved with ‘The Bix’ race for over 30 years. He first served as a committee chairman responsible for the race finish line set-up. Next, he worked with Junior Bix for ten years. The following ten years Dan and Kristi chaired the Bix 7 merchandise committee. In addition, Dan and Kristi volunteered with various parts of the race set up and clean up throughout the years.
Dan served his community in many ways. He was a Boy Scout Leader planning ski trips, guiding badge activities, and helping with the Pinewood Derby. Dan organized The Salvation Army Red Bucket Bell Ringing Program for his church, the Asbury United Methodist Church. Whenever they were short of volunteers, Dan would gather the kids, and they would man the station outside K&K Hardware in Bettendorf. Dan also volunteered for the Games Committee for the North High School After Prom program. He enjoyed planning and organizing class reunions for classmates from Bettendorf High. He spent many hours tracking down his classmates. Another great accomplishment and sincere gift, Daniel was an organ donor, having donated a kidney to a dear friend. As a universal donor, Dan donated blood regularly over his lifetime.
Dan will be remembered for his kind, caring nature, his love of family, and always being the first to ask, “What can I do? How can I help?” He loved a good joke, a good burger, a Coors beer, a snuggle with his fur baby, a meat-lover’s pizza, and a great song.
A special thanks to the personnel of Harmony Utica Ridge and Heartland Hospice for their hard work and compassion in caring for Dan and the support provided to his family.
A Celebration of Dan’s Life will be held on Sunday, June 29, 2025. Visitation will be from 3:30-5:00 pm at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home in Davenport with a service following. A reception will be held later that evening.
