Daniel “Dan” Richard Burroughs, 78, of Princeton, died Saturday, May 3, 2025 at Clarissa Cook Hospice House, surrounded by family.
Visitation will be held on Monday, May 12, 2025 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will be held for family and friends at a later date. Burial will be held privately at Salem Lutheran Cemetery in Princeton, IA. Memorials may be made to Clarissa Cook Hospice House or the American Liver Foundation.
Daniel was born on February 16, 1947 in Davenport, Iowa, a son of Leola (Buck) Burroughs and Raymond Burroughs. He attended Central High School, where he met his future wife. He joined the Army in 1964 and after serving for three years in Munich, Germany, Dan was discharged in August of 1967. Less than a month later, Daniel was happily married to the love of his life, Bernetta “Ann” Schaefer, at Saint Matthews Lutheran Church on September 9, 1967. Ann blessed Dan with two children.
Daniel worked hard to provide for his family. Dan worked for 43 years as a mason before retiring from Bob White Masonry and was a proud member of the BAC Local 8 for 57 years. The day after Dan retired, he began a “part-time” position with Billion Auto. When he truly retired, Dan never truly stopped working with his hands. He loved volunteering for Habitat for Humanity and helping others.
Dan will be remembered by his family and friends as a car enthusiast, and by his neighbors as the man who constantly washed his cars. In his free time, Dan loved being outside mowing grass and tending to his garden, where he was known for his tomato plants and the large tomatoes he received from them. Above all, Daniel will be remembered for how he held himself to the highest standard of kindness and humility. He was an old soul with boundless wisdom to share and an unending love for his family.
Those left to honor his memory are his beloved wife, Ann Burroughs; his sons Matt (Megan) Burroughs of Davenport, IA, and Aaron (Susan) Burroughs of Princeton, IA; his granddaughters Jackie (Craig) Harvill, Dr. Shelby (Atticus) Garrison, and Haley Burroughs; his grandson Adam Burroughs; his sister, Kathy Vanderpool of Davenport, IA; his brother, Ray (Lori) Burroughs of Eldridge, IA; his sister-in-law Janet Burroughs; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Leola Burroughs, as well as his brother, David Burroughs.
