Funeral services and Mass of Christian Burial for Celia “Sally” Rangel, 85, of Davenport, will be 10a.m. Thursday, November 16, 2023 at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Davenport. Burial will be in the Rock Island National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. Visitation will be 4 until 6p.m. Wednesday at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home with a prayer service offered at 4 p.m. Memorials may be made to the LULAC Council 10 Scholarship Fund.
Celia Ramirez was born on April 6, 1938 in Davenport, a daughter of Ycidro and Maria (Perez) Ramirez. She was united in marriage to Hilario E. Rangel on July 22, 1967 at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church. He preceded her in death on April 24, 2011.
Sally worked as a physical therapist assistant for many years before licensing laws changed and she became the unit secretary at Mercy Hospital for 22 years. She later worked at Flower City and retired from the bookstore and Palmer College.
Sally spent a great deal of time volunteering and serving our community. She was the 1st woman president of the LULAC Council 10, a member of the Bi-State Regional Commission, Plus 60, Citizens Advisory Committee–City of Davenport, former president of the Q.C. Mexican-American Organization, and was heavily involved in the Democratic Party.
Survivors include her son, Nik Ramirez; daughter, Sandi Sweetland; daughter-by-choice, Jennifer Helean, all of Davenport; grandchildren: Troy Sweetland, Victoria (Luis) Tovar, Melinda Sweetland, and Melissa (Nick) O’Dell; siblings: Alcadio Ramirez, Hoffman Estates, Illinois, Lupe (Sharon) Ramirez, Davenport and many great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Jose Alfred Rangel in 1981, her parents, and siblings: Gregory Ramirez, Rosa Vorhauer, John Ramirez, Jesse Ramirez, Joe Ramirez, George Ramirez, and Juanita Schroder. May they rest in peace.
The family would like to thank Heartland Hospice for all of the wonderful, dedicated care they shared with Celia.
