Catherine Evalyn Weiss, 84, of New Smyrna Beach, Florida, formerly of Davenport, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, July 1st, 2026.

She was born at St. Luke’s Hospital in Davenport, Iowa on September 13th, 1941 to Frederick B. and Clarissa J. (Craton) Hunt.

She is preceded in death by her parents, and her husband Stephen Weiss, M.D., her brother Frederick B. Hunt, Jr., and a granddaughter, Tricia Pauli.

Catherine is survived by her sisters Leigh Butler (Charlie) and Jamie Vance (Alex); daughters, Katy Wilkens (Brian) of Rochester, MN; Clarissa Weiss of TN; and sons, Dr. Stephen G. Weiss, II, (Susie) of New Smyrna Beach, Florida, and Philip Dean Weiss of Davenport, Iowa and grandchildren, Tessa Weiss, Harold and Louise Colloton, Erica and Casey Pauli; Ashley, Lizzie and Taylor Wilkens as well as many cousins, nephews, and nieces including her cousin and dearest friend Peggy Kroeger.

During her lifetime, Catherine was a devoted wife and mother who taught Sunday school at Trinity Cathedral for many years and was heavily involved in her children’s activities including Blue Birds, Cub Scouts and the Davenport Swim Team. She graduated from Davenport High School in 1959, completed a BA in English from Marycrest College (thesis collating the works of James Thurber) in 1963, and attended graduate school at the University of Iowa where she met her husband at a laundromat. She went on to become the business manager of his urological practice for many decades. In 2015, at the age of 74, she was accepted to Stetson University’s inaugural class where she completed an MFA in Creative Writing. Her children’s stories entitled “The Adventures of Clarissa Jane Craton” were immensely popular among the students and faculty. She also composed a novella titled, See You Down the Road, in which she envisioned an alternate reality for her life as a famous romance writer.

Funeral Services will be held at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Davenport, Iowa, on September 12th at 2:30 pm with visitation following the service in the Reception Hall at 4:30 pm. Halligan-McCabe-DeVries is assisting the family with arrangements.

Memorials may be made in Catherine’s memory to the Humane Society of Scott County.
