Calvin died Thursday, July 23, 2026 at Bickford Cottage, Davenport.
Calvin George Capranos was born on April 10, 1969, in Austin, Minnesota, to Richard and Virginia Capranos. A natural athlete and natural-born leader, he attended Austin High School where he excelled as their football team's quarterback before earning his bachelor’s degree in business and marketing from Minnesota State University, Mankato.
After college, Calvin joined Patterson Dental as a territory representative. He relocated to Iowa and built a highly successful 28-year career selling everything from a cotton roll to a piece of equipment that will mill out a crown the same day. Calvin collected friends wherever he went, often forming lifelong friendships at the many dental offices he visited, including where he met his fiancé, Heather Ross. Thanks to his many top-performance awards at Patterson, Calvin and Heather indulged their shared love of travel with many company-sponsored international trips. Calvin and Heather were together for 17 years, devoted life partners, and best friends.
Calvin was preceded in death by his father, Richard Capranos. He is survived by his mother, Virginia Capranos, beloved brothers, James, Timothy, and Thomas Capranos (Sherry), and his fiancé Heather Ross. True to their lifelong "band of brothers" bond, Calvin and his brothers stayed in regular contact through the years, sharing endless joy, laughter, and camaraderie on annual hunting and fishing trips, jet-skiing, snowmobiling, and simply showing up for one another.
Though he didn't need an official title to prove his devotion, Calvin was more than happy to provide a consistent, caring, fatherly presence in the lives of Heather’s children, Preston and Lauren Ross. His capacity for love also extended to his loyal labrador retrievers, Jack and Cooper.
A lifelong, devoted member of the Catholic Church, Calvin made it a point to seek out Mass in whichever city he found himself on Sundays. He also prioritized his physical health, exercising more days than not and staying active until he no longer could—turning the gym into yet another place to strike up lifelong friendships. A true music lover and passionate drummer, Calvin loved jamming out, especially with his longtime bandmates in Monkey Around. He was an avid bowhunter and collector of classic cars.
Diagnosed four years ago with Early-Onset Alzheimer’s Disease, Calvin faced his diagnosis with immense grace. This disease appears at the end of his story because it was never what defined him or his life; it was simply how he died. While it impacted him and those around him greatly, it never stripped away his humanity, his love for life, or his signature sense of humor.
The family extends profound gratitude to Dr. Rodney Short, Olivia Masterson, and Tonya Norgard with the Neurology Group, the loving, attentive staff at Senior Star and Bickford Memory Care centers, as well as his private nurse caretaker Kristian Hoyt, who cared for him deeply his last year, and Ashley and Midanney who helped in his last months.
Calvin’s legacy is one of boundless joy, infectious laughter, deep loyalty, and a reminder to always play like a kid at heart and love with your whole soul.
