Bernice Verrre, 103, of Davenport, passed away, Tuesday, August 5, 2025 at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00pm, on Monday, August 11, 2025, at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home. Her family will greet friends prior to the service from 12:00pm until the time of service at the funeral home. Per her wishes cremation rites have been accorded, and inurnment will be in National Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal. Please join the family for a luncheon following the burial at the Elks. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or Myhre Syndrome Foundation in honor of her grandson Ty Puente.
Bernice was born on June 25, 1922 in Muscatine, Iowa, daughter of Patrick and Tina (Heuer) Hopewell. She was united in marriage to Joseph Verre on June 30, 1949, at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Davenport. Together they shared 72 years of marriage.
Bernice began working at the phone company and Shell Oil. She finished her working career as a cook at St. Alphonsus Catholic School. She was a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic School, Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority and was a Lady Elks- Doe for over 45 years. Bernice spent most of her life volunteering and giving back to the community. She also loved to play cards, especially Euchre and 500, and would do so every Tuesday up until last month.
Those left to honor her memory include her son Steve Verre; grandchildren Destiny (Andrew) Puente, Josh (Katie) Verre and Samuel (Valerie) Gonzales; grand-daughter in law, Jessica Verre; great grandchildren Miles Verre, Rory Vogt, Joseph and Ty Puente, Johnny and Mollie Verre, and Milo and Maverick Gonzalez; niece Carla Hairston; nephews Jim Faramelli and Denny Verre; and her card club ladies.
She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph, daughter Cynthia Verre, infant daughter Christine, grandson Jeremiah Verre, and siblings Della McArtor, Genevieve Albee Verre and Patrick Hopewell, Jr.
