In 1934, bread was 8-cents a loaf, a movie ticket was 25-cents, a postage stamp was 3-cents, and Alice Mary Corbett was born on November 27.  She died Wednesday, February 1, 2023 at Good Samaritan, Davenport, Iowa.

 

Alice was the last of four children born to Margaret Irene (Oakley) and John Glenn Corbett. She attended public schools in Dubuque, Iowa, and graduated from the University of Dubuque in 1958.

 

After serving four years as a YWCA teenage program director, Alice moved to Chicago where she enjoyed employment in administrative positions. She married Jerry R. Harris December 18, 1966. He preceded her in death on October 1, 1983.

 

Alice established Harris Services, a secretarial service, after her husband's death. After moving to the Quad-Cities, she met the Lord and began her journey in the Christian life. Retirement activities included discipleship through Bettendorf Presbyterian Church, care of children as needed, commitment to the support of Hope at the Brick House, caregiver in Safe Families, Scott County Republican Women, and Church Women United.

 

Those living to honor her death include her nieces and nephew, Jane and Les Cox, Laura Corbett, Marcia Underwood, Jean Whitfield (Walt), Joan Wristen, Julia Gonzalez, Robin Hamilton (Karl), Susan Rowland (Matt), Cynthia Vedeen (John), Connie Schultz (Dave),  Ross Corbett (Juanita) and a special great-nephew, Corbett Reta.

 

In addition to her husband, Alice was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Rita Huttig, her brothers Jack and Earl Corbett, and her great-nephew, Nathan Cox

 

A Memorial Service to celebrate Alice’s life will be 1 p.m. Monday, February 13, 2023 at Bettendorf Presbyterian Church.  There will be a gathering in the Fellowship Hall at church following services.  Memorials may be made to Hope at the Brick House, University of Dubuque, or Bettendorf Presbyterian Church.
